I had shitty parents who let me sit in front of the TV 24/7 and have never found the motivation improve myself as an adult. I should kill myself for the good of humanity.
My parents let me do this, but that was back when there were only a few channels, so the damage was somewhat limited. You either watched things you would never choose to (somewhat expanding your horizons) or you just turned it off and read a book.
The stuff on TV was far more eductional, too. You'll legitimately learn more from watching 10 minutes of David Attenborough in the 80's than you will from everything he has made since 2000.

The only thing I learned from watching Star Trek Voyager at 10pm on UPN was that I too would maybe have Black Vulcan and Mayo Nepobabies as friends.
I do not have Mayo Nepobabies or Black Vulcans as friends. I was sold a false promise of the future.
