Monero is probably the greenest Proof of Work crypto out there. Most of the wasteful energy expenditure from Bitcoin can be attributed to massive ASIC mining operations. Monero's hashing algorithm is intentionally tweaked with every update to prevent it from being dominated by such huge actors who could jeopardize the hash power balance of the network.
