i bet it was the inflation-adjusted number for their 19th-century peak or something like that. and they probably drastically overvalued some of their assets, too

I'm sure it's a lot more than $1B. but the truth is nobody really knows, and they definitely don't want people to know and are putting pressure on forbes, investopedia, and similar sites to give low estimates.

Over the course of 200 years a lot of wealth can be hidden away. Tracking wealth internationally was extremely difficult until very recently and the Rothschilds were very international from the beginning.
