My foids 11 year old (at the time) niece sent some reddit post (red flag) that she had posted (red flag). My foid doesn't know much about reddit so just looked at the cute post and went on. I went looking through it and found she was posting on amongus porn subs making jokes, answering "What is one thing you wish you could have told your parents growing up" kind of prompts with "I'm not straight and I never will be," and posting direct links to her apple cloud account for pictures she took.
In fairness to the kids parents, she has always seemed way smarter than your average 11 year old but that was a big wake up call that you obviously can't trust r-slurred children with unfettered computer/phone and internet access (though it never should have needed said).

What the frick. Look, I think a ton of us grew up with parents who didn't understand technology. I bet everyone on this site grew up looking at fricked up shit from 12+. But we know that's not ideal right? Like we don't feel damaged by it, but you as a parent cannot have the type of relationship with your kid where you're just like, hey, you're 13, and we found this real degenerate shit. It's okay I was a degenerate too, just don't use the school computer! Feels like a real fricking failure of parenting. That's fair. To be honest I don't know the demographics of the site, I assume some of the less/more r-slurred ones are my age, and the rest are about 10 years younger. I got in right in time for dial up but then had to deal with it a couple of years into the DSL age because my family was cheap as frick. Once I got that speed up, it was no more jerking off to bowflex paid programming and girls gone wild ads for me.

Only got "caught" once. I was in a "rougher" part of a neighborhood where nobody would really care. Only aimed for the people who i knew wouldnt go crazy and call 5-0. I don’t think I was damaged per se. I was never looking at super weird porn or anything more illegal than drug forum .onion links. But I do think all the gore and death videos I saw in my early teens changed me. I have a lot less empathy for interpersonal struggles. Maybe it was because of that, maybe I’m just actually neurodivergent. But all my friends grew up using the normal parts of the internet and they’re way more apt in the empathy department.
