It really isn't that great. I'm guessing that a lot of the people who'd agree are afraid of getting brow-beat with "It's too smart for you!". It does get pretty technical, granted, but when you have to think about a joke, it usually isn't funny — and that completely exclude the ones that are just science/tech references that you're suppose to laugh at for getting. This would be fine if it wasn't a comedy. I laughed out loud at futurama once, and it wasn't at one of the heckin science-love jokes — it was bender telling parents to hit their kids.

Other major problem is that Fry, Bender, and Leela are the only real characters. The others are just plot devices or springboards for jokes which all got used up in the first season ("I've got bad depth perception, you know!"). Also that the plots are just really lazy and bland. I've seen episodes where I correctly guessed what the twist end would be in the first 5 minutes; not a mark of intelligence or anything, just because of a complete lack of subtlety and tact on the part of the script.

Basically it's just not a good comedy: it's just not funny, has bad plots and bad characterization. I really wanted to like it, because my impression had been that it was like the simpsons in a sci-fi setting, but the simps far exceed it in all the parts that matter (while being equally cerebral, at least where jokes were concerned). It had a really neurodivergent approach to scriptwriting that was then decorated with some creative ideas that were neat, but just not enough to make me laugh. The funniest episode was probably the bureaucracy one.
