Fun fact: The Tiananmen Square protests began as a wake for popular politician Hu Yaobang. Hu was seen as above the corruption endemic in the Deng Xiaopeng government. Against Hu's advice, Deng's government had recently introduced market reforms to remove subsidies on fuel which had caused huge price rises and hardships in all areas. Those reforms had been praised by foreign economists as a further step towards the opening up of China's economy because burger politics 101 is capitalism= democracy.

No. Deng's reaction against the protests was the deathknell of China. There was a brief moment in which China could have achieved true greatness. Granted, it probably would not have looked like the typical "democratic" model that the West was used to, but it was a brief glimpse of greatness of China.

based on where taiwan is these days, you gotta imagine the mainland would be in different and probably better shape had things not gone to shit in 1949. who the heck knows how that would have affected the cold war though
