Redditor whines about landchad parents charging rent on r/AusFinance

https://old.reddit.com/r/AusFinance/comments/scqieo/i_pay_1200month_rent_to_my_parents_is_this_normal

The post in question:

I am 22, I pay for all of my own food and consumables + some extra things around the house, my parents know that I am trying to save up for a home deposit, is it normal for them to charge me $1,200/month in board?

(I was previously paying them $1,600, until my wife and I got married about 8 weeks ago, which we paid for ourselves)

Edit: My parents have specifically told me not to get my hopes up, as they are not saving these rent payments to give back to me later

Edit 2: parents have told us they DO NOT want us to leave.

Edit 3: We WANT TO leave

Edit 4: We apply to for a rental property almost every day, as we have realised that we aren’t going to be able to own a home.

$1200 a month! To live with his parents?! This is outrageous. It's unfair. How can you live with your parents and be forced to pay rent! :marseypearlclutch: :marseypearlclutch:

Let's see what other details we can glean from the comments section.

Top comment:

Lol definitely not. You can get a decent room with an ensuite in a house with a couple of friends or new friends for $800 a month, which also gives you the added bonus of some personal freedoms.

But maybe they already have massive room and an ensuite. Plus all the furniture and appliances. We don’t know the full context😅

[OP] One regular office space (about 5x5m), and one 3x4m bedroom, an old couch and some pillows.

Street parking.

I do have a small workbench in the garage for some cowtools/etc

I think this would be fair if i was renting my own space away from parents 🤷🏻‍♂️

Well now we have some more information. Interesting that despite making 4 edits, none of this information is in the OP :marseyhmm: :marseyhmm:

One helpful user sums it up for us:

The OP should read....

Hi im a 22 year old man, married with a full time job living under my parents roof.

My wife also lives here with me, im renting out a bedroom, a large office space and part of a garage. I have some hobbies that require me to need to store some things. Eg a secure safe.

I buy my own food but use as much water, electricity fridge space and cooking utensils as i like. My wife uses my mums washing machine and dryer for our clothes.

My parents are charging me less than $300 a week for the 2 of us to live here. Is this normal?

OP. The answer is yes! If you dont like it, move out! You're a grown butt married man. Your mum doesnt want to here you plowing your wife!

A fair few comments are now rightfully pooping on OP as more info has come to light, but the victim rentoid mindset that permeates Reddit is still present in the comments. Lets take a look.

When my wife and I got married, they said they weren’t going to help at all (other than give us a discount on rent) and we also didn’t get any wedding presents from them lol

In the 8 weeks since OP got married, that's already $800. Narcissists!!

Yeah my parents fricked me into paying most of the bills too. You need to move out.

Same financially abused by my mother until I was in my early 30’s I moved out when I was as 22 and she still had her hand in my wallet; we’re NC now so I’m much better now

I used to associate money with love so go figure !

If the Reddit bar for abuse gets any lower, James Cameron is going to have to dive on it. :marseysmug2: :marseysmug2:

It's excessive. You could rent a whole house for $350 p/w and you and your wife could walk around naked all day and bang in the lounge room.

Thank you for your input, Mr Cooms :coomer: :coomer:

Just a question, why did you get married with no money or assets? Or even a place to live of your own?

[OP] It was a bit of a move to prove to my parents that I was serious about moving out and starting a family. That worked out well…

Redditors posting their Ls online.

Thankfully, thanks to the advice he's received in r/AusFinance, it appears OP is going to change his ways, start saving more, and move out with his new wife....

Jokes, he's already off in r/EDC posting about some new $70USD knife that he wants to consoom

I really want a Tirant Razor but Amazon doesn’t have them in stock and their website doesn’t ship to Australia :(

Can we get a Britney Spears-style conservatorship for this Redditor?

How can you get married and between the two of you not manage to split a small apartment somewhere. Surely it's not their expensive spending habits and hobbies that are in the way
