Maybe it's hard to try and launder that much but smaller amounts of BTC can go through mixers pretty easily.

After reading the article it appears the couple didn't even use a dedicated mixer. They deposited it to AlphaBay which claimed to have a crypto mixer, but they clearly didn't do any research on AlphaBay because its domain was previously seized by law enforcement.

In all likelihood, if they went through an established, dedicated mixer and did the atomic swap to monero, then took the results and put that through another mixer for monero-->monero, they wouldn't have been caught.
