I did this whole sci-fi worldbuilding thing in my early teens where all of the characters were aliens whose designs progressively became more of an even mix between human body shape and kind of a lizard/feline appearance, I was sheltered so I didn't really know what a furry was until a while later, but the seeds were probably there then. I'm definitely still interested in my personal stuff more than 'fandom' stuff but it's fun sometimes. I'm not blatant about it so it doesn't affect my life all that much aside from when my furriends want to draw stuff with me.

Around 97/98. I got StarFox 64 for my 13/14th Birthday and had unfettered access to a family computer my dad used to run his business. Also, Digimon was a huge hit with me. I had an neurodivergent obsession with Leomon and Weregarurumon.
I found roleplaying forums for StarFox and thought it was cool. That lead to general furry communities like Furnation and Usenet groups. I was really into the MUDs/MUCKS/MUSH roleplay stuff as well. Spent a crazy amount of time on Furcadia.
It actually took me a couple years until I found furry porn existed. Some online friends were sharing links to the VCL and I stumped upon it there. Then StarFox Adventures in 2002 had me bombarded with Krystal porn. I used to think I was straight/bi back then. Eventually I just realized I only liked looking at the dudes.

Honestly with the number of dudes who won’t go down on women, and the historical prevalence of homosexuality, I think a lot of men are just environmentally straight anyway.
Furries provide the transition between “basically a woman but the artist says she has a peepee” to normal men with none of the typical turn offs because they’ve abridged those into creatures whose difference between a man and a woman are negligible anyway. basically as soon as I realized the furry community existed I knew two things:
it described me perfectly
it was low-status and I wanted nothing to do with it
there's no one specific point. I went from obsessing over Redwall and Animorphs to roleplaying as Pokemon to lurking on DeviantArt to plotting out an elaborate novel with anthro characters, onward and upward, without ever interacting with the furry community beyond watching art (oddly enough, mostly actual art - I usually avoided nsfw stuff for a long while). I didn't know the subculture existed as a young teen when I decided "dragons mating" was what I should stealth-Google to find my first lewd pictures; I just knew I wanted to see dragons and not people.
