it's not really a token at all, just an image

that's the joke

that's not the joke. the joke is that they're "extremely fungible". Like that it's the opposite of an NFT, but the punchline they delivered is that it's just an image which has nothing to do with NFTs at all.

It's like if I tried to sell you a car with square wheels (to make fun of shady car dealerships), but instead of having a car with square wheels to complete the joke, I just pointed to a boulder. And then when you're like "haha that's funny, but where are the wheels", I just give you a confused look that suggests I have no idea what a car even is.

Also it's hosted on some google website bullshit by some r-slurs who don't really understand all that much about NFTs, and are just coping and seething about shit they have been told is bad.

I think I see what you mean...

For context I think NFTs as a technology have potential use cases. I just personally don't see value in the art application. As I understand it NFTs only link to a regular image (which is often a google drive link as you said) that has no metadata that points back to the NFT address. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Also, I have yet to see proof that NFTs HURT artists; I believe that most if not all artists in this field are entrepenuers. I'm also not an eco-nut who thinks the environment will die if computers work harder.

Don't get me wrong, this NFT shit is mostly for straggits. But when you hear about stupid crap like NFTs, shitcoins, or whatever the best thing to do is just ignore it. It's free advertising: The more you talk about it, the more normalstrags will hear about it, the more they will like it (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mere-exposure_effect).

The idea that NFTs hurt artists is based on the fact that scammy NFT "creators" will just rip someone else's art of the internet and make an NFT of it. By that logic, websites hurt artists because I can make a fake website claiming to be someone else where I reupload their art. Paint hurts artists because they can be used to make fraudulent paintings.

The idea that cryptocurrencies are bad for the enviroment holds some truth to it. The bitcoin network's energy usage is on the order of 100 TWh's, which is comparable to the power usage of e.g. the gold mining industry. But what many people misunderstand is that the power usage of the network (at equilibrium) isn't related to the transaction rate or the network traffic. The energy usage is mostly fixed and depends on the block reward function in terms of the price of electricty (Bitcoins per block x Dollars per bitcoin x Watt-Hours per Dollar). Also number of transactions per second is FIXED.

It really doesn't matter what goes on in the etherium network. It uses the same amount of energy no matter what. You could have the network mint a billion monkey NFTs, have thousands of etherium transactions, or do completely nothing at all. The etherium network will continue to use the same amount of energy regardless.
