well reddit used to be a smaller, nerdier community with a more liberal/libertarian optimistic, concise, "hacker-y" worldview. That was until the likes of spez "sold out" with new reddit and stuff back in 2015-2016.
It's not that people hate on spez for not making the site how they specifically want (although some do). It's more like spez & friends marketed reddit as the nerdy free-speech/open-discussion forum-killer website and then sold out later by making it into a normie echo chamber. You can still see the old vision of reddit in HN.
It used to be that reddit gold was considered a "donation" to keep the site running without ads. There was a big sidebar that showed how much of the daily server costs were covered by the gold donations, and most days it would exceed 100%. Like, people would use reddit gold just to donate to reddit.com because they liked the website and owners so much. That's how esteemed reddit's reputation used to be among dork communties. Now reddit gold is like a weird astroturfing thing, and people either don't care or hate the website and creators.
Reddit still to this day has a bunch of good old subreddits with only <1000 users related to dork stuff like programming (for example, /r/opengl). That's from the good old days when reddit was killing all the small forums and destroying larger "social news" sites like digg.
Also, spez is just seen as evil after the whole editing T_D comments calling him a p-do thing. Not all founders are hated as much as spez. There are figures like kn0wthing and aaron swartz that are more liked. Pao was probably more hated because she set off the domino effect that made the site what it is today.

Reddit going from open to restrictive and political seems to reflect the direction that social media in general has gone in. It's reached a point where people are afraid of saying what they want to because they'll get banned. Just within the past couple of years social media (Reddit, Twitter, Facebook) has gotten more restrictive, and it's a trend that seems to be continuing

Yeah, the problem is fundamentally that all these big social media companies have reached mass adoption. They used to spend a ton of venture capital on attaining users and running the sites at a loss. The censorship isn't a politically-motivated thing, it's for advertisers. This is how these social media companies "cash out" on their users.
Eventually we will get to the point where (non-rightoid) users get pissed off. You have leftoids going to mastodon and peertube and stuff. I mean even on youtube it's not just rightoids getting banned, it's LGBT stuff too.
