I'm thinking that it's might just be reddit codecels/management being incompetent. Nobody thought about preparing for various obvious shit they had to deal with, so they had to come in hot with hacks and kludges. The type of bans they gave to us reeks of that too, "hey Joe, I know that it's 11 PM but we need to ban these shitlords stat" -- "Yeah, sure, I'll just make a button that fricks with their password hash".
