Do people really follow esports like regular sports?

To a degree. They were fun to follow when there was a ton of illegal betting and there was a csgo general on /vg/

Rocket League and Overwatch are kinda fun to watch but it’s hard to get excited for, like you’ll have the commentary team hyping up an event like it’s the Champions League final then out walks twelve 105lb Korean teenagers.

Modern esports are dead and way too corporate. I'll watch a few csgo games a month if a team I like is playing, but everything is too squeaky clean. You don't get pictures of players passed out on hotel lobby floors or tweeting out oddly erotic bath pics with teammates. Personally, I can't comment on RL or OW since I never really cared for those games, but as time went on and the meta got more developed, games got less hype in CS or Dota. People are playing smarter and safer, which is 'better,' but way less exciting. All the crazy big balls teams are long gone.

Like Ad Finem, I think that was their name, the great Dota team, had some amazingly exciting game I remember listening to at work years ago where they snuck a dude into the other team's base and I think won because the other team wasn't expecting that. Or fnatic in CS making big peepee plays all the time and being buttholes in every interview. Nowadays pretty much everyone is cookie cutter corporate 'we played well, too bad, good luck to them' types on the camera. Way less fun.
