I am a trans school social worker supporting a non-binary student. When the student started at my school, I sent an email to staff letting them know the student's preferred name and pronouns and that the parents were not supportive. This is allowed in my state and supporting trans students even when parents don't agree is required by law.
My principal took disciplinary action against me. I fought it. I won.
Lots of students have been coming to me with questions about the new student and themselves. So I taught a lesson today on gender identity. Real basic, real tame.
The principal walked through while I was teaching. Next thing I know, someone from the Central Office is in my office asking about an inappropriate lesson I taught. Then I get an email from the superintendent that I am on administrative leave until further notice. Finally, the principal sent an email to the ENTIRE staff (including cooks and custodians) publicly shaming me for teaching a lesson on (get this) s*x ed without prior approval.
I have never been so outraged and humiliated and words I don't even have. I am facing possible job loss for teaching students about people like myself in a state where that is allowed.
I just want to crawl in a hole. She has only been principal for 2 years but they have been hard years. She has treated me like garbage from day one. Quiet harassment by not including me and blocking me from important information regarding my students. I am exhausted and emotionally spent.
I had already planned on quitting after this year. Now I might sue for gender discrimination. She should have just waited four weeks.

At their previous school, there were some behavioral concerns surrounding the frequent changing of preferred name and pronouns. To avoid these concerns at our school, I was instructed to tell this student that they had to pick a name and pronoun set and stick to it.
I stated that because I felt that this was harmful and likely to cause more behavioral concerns, I was not comfortable telling the student this.
Silence from admin and then at the end of the day I received an email claiming that I refused a directive along with a couple of other violations. (One being that I sent an email to staff explaining the student's preferred name and pronouns and that when addressing the parents, please use the student's legal name and assigned at birth pronouns. The student had already shared this with students and staff. I wanted building support staff to understand because the secretary had already outed the student to the parents and they were very angry.)
I suspect admin is afraid of the parents and throwing me under the bus.
This whole thing has been very upsetting and I am so disappointed and angered by the treatment of this student, and, indirectly, all trans students and staff.

Kids are fricking r-slurred, emotionally immature, needy, insecure, self-absorbed and manipulative. In the recent past, as teachers and adults we were supposed to guide children out of these behaviors by modelling GOOD behaviors (emotional control, selflessness, reasonability/rationality, self-reflection, empathy for others, etc) and encouraging/rewarding the same in students.
Somewhere in the past 5-10 years, however, that all changed and outside of Florida we are now all supposed to encourage kids to be even more r-slurred than ever before. Kids like it when you feed into their r-slurred behavior because it's immediately rewarding and they like pretty much any attention they can get, and they get a LOT of extra attention nowadays if they change their gender every other week.
So yes, they actually change their genders on a whim. I had one student last year who went through 3 sets of pronouns and 4 gender changes -- this is not a joke, xer mom even emailed the whole school staff about it every time this kid decided to transition.
