Yes to be honest. The leniency and amnesty with which they were treated gave legitimacy to their treasonous behavior. That false legitimacy has persisted until today, paving the way for the right-wing extremism we see flourishing in the U.S. The idiotic notion that the battle flag of the Army of Northern Virginia represents some kind of cultural "heritage" worth respecting can be traced directly back to the decision to collectively let these people off the hook. I would argue that leniency is at least somewhat responsible for January 6th. Eerily, we have seen the perpetrators of Jan. 6th enjoy similar leniency.

Part of it is kind of right, but the destruction of the south's economy during the civil war, the Reconstruction era as a punishment, and carpetbaggers created the perfect conditions where the confederacy was venerated and the KKK was tolerated. Over zealous morons looking for punishment, like everyone in that thread, made the south what it is. And now we have a second wave of carpetbaggetry happening with thousands fleeing the coastal states and moving south and bringing their same dumb politics that made them leave in the first place. They're turning southern cities with unique culture and history into "generic American city for liberal white women #52"
