Sorry for being a seriuous-posting r-slur for a second, but hes done foundational work in the field of linguistics. We came to understand how people aquire languages largely because of him. So people really respect him for that. The problem is hes a bog standard neo-lin and people think hes also a genius in economics and foreign policy. Hes not.

Manufacturing Consent was good in its larger concept, it's been too long for me to remember any of his finer points though. But at the same time it was nothing terribly special and anyone with mild critical thinking ability could come to the same idea.

Manufacturing consent was very bad.
You convince people from 10k km away from each other to work together for a greater purpose through one and only one thing. And that thing is shared beliefs. But how do you convince people of beliefs? It's not something logical, because any ethical system requires axioms that are by definition not logical. You convince them through propaganda.
Propaganda is good and the masses should be fed more of it.
