He was just an ordinary kid caught up in extraordinary circumstances. There is another world where he went to university, made loving friendships, found a girl, got a job, bought a house, raised a family and grew old with his wife. He could have had a normal life. No one deserves to endure that stress and isolation at such an early age. I'm sure this entire time he was begging for someone to find him.
