depending on the season, skuas and jaegers will get up to 90% of their diet from STEALING. they’ll chase after a bird, even a much LARGER bird, like a gannet, grab it by the wing, and drag it under the ocean waves, holding it underwater until the gannet releases its catch, and the skua STEALS IT from him.

skuas are some of my favorite birds. my favorite species is the Pomarine Jaeger (which actually has a really insteresting hybridization), and one of the darkest moments of my life was when I was birding at the beach and when I checked eBird after, some motherlover SAW A POMARINE JAEGER AN HOUR BEFORE I GOT THERE. I MISSED MY FRICKING FAVORITE BIRD BY AN HOUR?? THAT WAS QUITE POSSIBLY A ONCE IN A LIFETIME OPPORTUNITY, THAT WAS AN EXTREMELY RARE SIGHTING. WHEN I FOUND OUT I WANTED TO KILL MYSELF. I STILL SEETHE ABOUT IT TO THIS VERY DAY (last time of seethe this morning at about 10:00 AM while birding)

Skua is two syllables, much like sparrow. Despite this shocking similarity, skuas and sparrows are quite different.

Skuas also bear a striking similarity to bluejays with the syllable count. Contrary to popular belief, a bluejay and a sparrow are also DIFFERENT birds.
