Some oubliettes had spikes below the entrance. So you would be shoved into the hole, drop and possibly be impaled on spikes and then just left there to die.

It's torture, in fact.

I maintain that oubliettes are torture. My statement is not meant to say that it's the ONLY kind of torture, just that it is known as torture. I think it would be pretty hideous to be dropped down a hole into a dark cave with other people and bodies in various states of decay and forgotten.
