TLDR: Nerds and hammers discover that connecting radio receivers to the internet is not always a good idea. Turns out every one of these popular $350 software-defined radios can be fully controlled and modified remotely with the right admin credentials. They are NOT happy that the creators coded a backdoor into their favorite radio. On top of that, these radios are capable of decoding GPS signals, so their locations are now compromised too.
The creator of KiwiSDR, after letting it slip that he had a backdoor, immediately went into damage control mode and erased any mention of it from his posts. He is now pretending on GitHub that he didn't know about this and is releasing a patch to cover it up.

I know I'm a massive cute twink for saying this but software-defined radios are actually kinda fun. You can do all sorts of quasi-legal shit like decode pager transmissions from hospitals (very easy to do btw) and track military aircraft. Only the very least interesting people use these for listening to radio stations or ham radio (which is unfortunately a considerable chunk of SDRcels)

Yeah I mean it def sounds neat but I deal with radios + RF shit for work, so it's not real appealing. I've built a few crazy HF antennas in shithole countries if you catch my drift.

I get that. I'm a chemist and for me SDR was a learning tool for RF stuff in general. Sort of a gateway drug, I guess. I now incorporate methods such as electrical impedance spectroscopy into my research, and I wouldn't have understood or cared about that stuff I not gotten into RF shit via SDR.

I know I sound like a glowie but it's still legal. I can't identify them but can track their velocity using a passive radar setup. I know saying anything anti-fed on this site makes you a glowie (lame af you kitties), but it's mostly legal and completely untraceable. I've posted about this all over the plainweb and never had any issue.
