Witches rush to explain why they can't hex the supreme court. Turns out Clarence Thomas himself is a powerful hoodoo priest

https://twitter.com/GL0RYG1RL/status/1540711790337835010

Remember it's not racist to imply that Clarence Thomas is a hoodoo warlock

I'm gonna be honest I think it's genuinely worrisome that grown up women are believing in fricking MAGIC. Voice of reason within me keeps telling me ''they're just r-slurs on the internet, they aren't meaningful''. But I can't quite shrug it off. Here in Brazil we have what we call the ''mystic young'', which basically means a young adult (99% of the time is a foid) who keeps talking about shit like ''good vibes'', unironically believe in horoscope/zodiac signs (actually 90% of the foids here seem to believe in that shit), tarot cards and so on. I don't like to make these claims because this isn't exactly political and I don't want to sound like a schizo, but this trend is also intrinsically linked with Leftism.

This shit bothers me so much I even forgot to make an obvious unfunny joke about how C. Thomas is a HOODo priest or a witch doctor or whatever

Likely a social response to the collapse of religion and no alternative besides consumerism.

Jump in the discussion.

No email address required.

Women were always into that shit, heck deeply religious foids are more likely to believe in supernatural mumbo jumbo like spirits and magic. This just comes off as more r-slurred than previous iterations because online "witchcraft" is hodgepodge of random beliefs stripped of their original cultural/religious context.

:marseyxdoubt:

I know that there’s a Santa Muerte cult in Mexico but it’s a small and recent development compared to more traditional invocations of death. Most of those “Santa Muerte shrines” and figurines on the internet are not even dedicated to her and rather they’re just accessories representing death. The cult in Mexico is literally just some (not all) cartels as well as some edgy urban youth want to be Satanist but still like the ritual and procession of Catholicism. The actual bulk of people “praying” to her Mexican-Americans who want to be counter-cultural but also culturally unique.

I hate how scholars and practitioners are trying to paint this as some deep Mexican religious/Catholic tradition when it is just a grift.

@ElverGalarga as are local resident beaner you want to weigh in?

Jump in the discussion.

No email address required.

Yeah, they’re mostly edgy, the same as Satanists

The Santa Muerte is not an Aztec or pre-colombian ritual, there were obviously representations of death in these cultures, but they are different and only tenuously linked to Santa Muerte.

It more or less didn’t exist until a few decades ago, and there’s no documentation of it existing prior to the 1970s.

There’s really no link to indigenous and especially náhuatl speaking peoples, this is mostly indigenous fetishism spread by chicanocels and hippy academics.

Santa Muerte worship mostly happens with delinquents and other “nacos”, (including some immigrants to the US) I have no idea how much is genuine and how much is because people think it’s cool—kinda like Tarot or twitter witches. The majority of Mexicans would look down on it, though. Catholics certainty would.

I think a lot of Chicanos/pochos pick up cultural elements of the lower class of immigrants (because that’s the social strata where most Mexican immigrants to the US come from) and idealize them like a funhouse mirror version of Mexican culture. Like their view of Mexico is a combination of Desperado and From Dusk Till Dawn.

There’s been some kind of a weird push to establish syncretism in Mexican Catholic traditions, and it’s fed off of chicanocels

like Sandra Cisneros and their weird identity complex and fetishism of Native/Mexican culture without fully understanding it.

I mean, there are syncretic aspects of the culture, just that most of the shit they point to is just them retconning shit to make it sound cooler to them.

Most of the “ties” to pre-colombian beliefs are from the work of this chick lmao

https://www.religiousstudiesproject.com/persons/kate-kingsbury/

edit: I would add that I don’t know a single College-educated Mexican (like actual Mexican) that I’ve ever seen have anything to do with Santa Muerte, even highly religious ones.

Jesse what the frick are you talking about??

Jump in the discussion.

No email address required.

Tbf to the Chicanocels, just this once :marseypuke:, most I’ve seen don’t bring up “Aztec/indigenous origins” of Santa Muerte and just treat it as a normal Satanism.

If you press them on something like a home owner association will it turn out there are HOA chud witches

Jump in the discussion.

there's an extremely convenient witchcraft "rule" that says if you cast a spell on someone else it will automatically reflect and hit you three times harder

so it literally doesn't matter if they're hexing the Taliban or some random Stacey in their college, they'll be fricked either way
