That's fricking stupid. The American military would never let it happen, but more importantly, it would never happen in the first place. Compared to other countries, California, Alabama, and Maine are culturally identical.

The American political system isn't thought about at all outside of social media, election day, and the heaviest blue leaning cities. Normal people don't give a shit. Politics isn't enough to cause Balkanization.

Absolute worst case scenario, Puerto Rico becomes independent because we got sick of their whining and constant need for support.

All of that being said, I could see a Balkanization inside the U.S. of states being made to game the electoral college and the senate.
