Unsurprisingly, I need to break this down for the smooth brained amongst us.
Undocumented immigration was a non-issue prior to Trump. He leveraged them as a racist trope to froth up his white supremacist base and ride their ignorance into power. Throughout Obamaβs terms undocumented migration from south of the border had become net negative, and was primarily limited to seasonal agriculture workers. Had he not exploited this issue, undocumented migrants would likely have diminished to insignificant numbers within a decade or so and become useless as a political cudgel.
Ironically his demonization tactics created the problem he was claiming to solve. His virulent racism inspired the benevolence and rebellion of the left to stand up and significantly expand sanctuary state policies which now serve as the draw for migrants to send their children for amnesty.

Either way, I imagine the current border situation is a combination of a bunch of different factors - the idea Trump being out of office would somehow open the borders up to immigrants (not true obviously) causing them to try their luck at higher rates is probably a big factor.
I don't know the full logistics of what Trump did to the system behind closed doors, I'd have to look into it, but given his general incompetence, I wouldn't be surprised if he did some insane shit.
