It's about keeping the runner on 1st, and keeping the double play or force on. Double plays are back breakers in softball, so keeping them on is more important then throwing the guy out at home the 1 out of 50 attempts the throw is on line, the catcher makes the play and the ump gets the call right. In addition, I can't tell you the number of times that an outfielder fired home, the hitter moved up to 2nd on the throw, next at bat, ground ball to an infielder, bad hop runner beats it out, where if there was a force on the fielder gets an out. (29)

Outfielders are responsible for having good judgement here but personally if the chances of making the out at home are that low I won't go for it and I'll go directly to second with the throw. If I decide to throw home it's because I think there's a really good shot that a good throw will result in an out. (-12)

To each their own I guess… a lot of this depends on your team too and skill sets … but sounds like you have it all figured out, not sure why you would need to ask. (6)

I'm not asking anything. I'm reminding people that if they are taking the game seriously enough to expect outfielders to the hit cut off man every time, then they need to have similar expectations for the other position players to do their part as well. (-2)

I'm not reading all that. Your arm isn't that good. Hit your cutoff.Signed, your pitcher. (9)

Dear pitcher,You just make sure you throw your 2 seam splitknucklescrewballslider for strikes or whatever fancy pitch you throw that doesn't actually do anything and let the actual fielders worry about making the plays. (-3)

It's always been the general rule on my teams that if you can make the throw from right to 3rd, or anywhere in the OF to home, fricking go for it. Bad throws will happen no matter the player no matter the situation, and bad/no catches will be made by the cut off guys. Shit happens. If you can make the throw, throw it. Angry pitcher be darned. I completely agree with this post. People don't realize what the cut-off is supposed to do, so 90% of the time I find that they aren't standing in the right place to be a proper cut-off. I still throw to them so that I don't get crucified, but I find it annoying that they'll give outfielders so much shit about this. (6)

Nope. The VAST majority of outfielders cannot make that throw with any consistency, and 9 times out of 10, you get a throw that goes to the backstop and an extra base for anyone on first or second. Unless your short stop or second basemen have no idea how to play softball and run to back up the catcher or something else that makes no sense, give up the run (which you would anyway) and hold the runners. Also, I'd suggest if you want to be taken more seriously, take your post title more seriously. Typing it out this way immediately undercuts your argument. (1)
