I kept watching Ascendance of a Bookworm and am halfway through season 3, will probably finish it today or tomorrow. I also started watching Machikado Mazoku again cause I never watched the second season even though I enjoyed season 1.

Anyone have any recommendations for trippy, mind-fricky anime?

hard to think of something trippy unless you wanna watch someth light like nichijou while high

but mind fricky in the sense that its got an intense and subversive plot, maybe ergo proxy, madoka magica, higurashi (2007 is my fav), or monster

might not be what youre looking for, but they fit like a psychlogical thriller genre that might work for you

Fooly Cooly is kino as frick. It was made by a bunch of young animators in 2000 to test out how to blend 3D animation into anime and they went absolutely wild with it, breaking whatever rules they wanted to along the way. The whole thing is clinically insane and hardly makes sense but it's a really good 6 episode series. Plus the entire soundtrack was made by a Japanese indie rock band and it goes hard as frick.

Serial Experiments Lain. I literally had no idea what was going on the entire time. Perfect Blue is a movie but it’s incredibly good. Paprika is another movie, great visuals and an inception-like plot. I also second the original Higirashi and even though they never finished it I thought the Umineko anime was pretty good.
