Based on the dips around major wars I'm guessing this chart includes unnatural deaths rather than just average natural lifespan. Because I really can't imagine 40 was the average lifespan as "recently" as the mid 1800s.

there's a dip during the civil war but if by natural you mean of diseases you'd be wrong. penicillin wasn't invented until like 1930. if you've had a bad case of pneumonia in your life you'd probably be dead

That's not lifespan, that's life expectancy. In the 1850, 4 out of 10 babies born died before reaching 5 years. That's what dramatically lowers the numbers on the chart.
