Final Fantasy 16 doesn't have any American English voice acting because Square Enix was worried it might offend... Americans.

This is according to Naoki "Yoshi-P" Yoshida, who touched on this aspect of Final Fantasy 16 in a recent interview with Dengeki Online(opens in new tab) (translated by @aitaikimochi(opens in new tab)). Yoshida explained that the English version of the game will be voiced solely by actors using British English, as the developers worried that American English-speaking characters would upset American players hoping for an authentic representation of medieval Europe.

"Even though the script is written in English, we made sure to not include any American accents," Yoshida said. "We decided to do this to prevent Americans from playing the game and getting mad and saying something like, 'I was looking forward to playing a game set in a fantasy Medieval Europe, but why are they speaking American English!?' (laughs). To prevent this, we made sure that all the dialogue was recorded using British English.

In the past, Final Fantasy characters have spoken in a variety of different accents. Tidus from Final Fantasy 10, Noctis from Final Fantasy 15, and most recently, Cloud from Final Fantasy Remake, just to name a few notable examples. Still, with Final Fantasy 16 bringing to life a distinctly European setting, it's understandable to have European talent voicing the characters for the English version.

Final Fantasy 16 is due to launch on PS5 as a console exclusive sometime in Summer 2023.

That actually makes sense and is a good decision. I know the british accent was technically created after the formation of america but its still what people associate with a medieval setting. In fact Squeenix has done this before, Dragon Quest VIII uses British accents for a good chunk of the game. The first American accent I found was like ten hours in with a giant mole who talks like James Brown

Dark Souls is the same no?

I doubt literally anyone cares about this. It's not that they're afraid of offending americans it's just a design decision for the setting.

Souls series (including Bloodborne and Elden Ring), I believe, cast their voice actors in England. I think they did a good job with the casting.

I don't play FF, so I certainly don't care.

They do an outstanding job on the Souls/Borne/Ring games (except Sekiro, which was handled by another team).

If you’ve lived in Britain a while you’ll immediately clock characters with certain regional accents, and the accents are consistently attached consistently to the same fictional in-game locations. If you run into two characters with Yorkshire accents, you can be certain they’re both from the same fictional place even if they never mention it.

It’s really good stuff with very high attention to detail - it deepens the lore and the sense you’re in a real, consistent world. They’re using local actors in most cases too, not having someone from elsewhere put on a phony accent.

Even in most mega budget Hollywood movies characters will be inconsistent with their accents. The funniest example is probably Robin Hood Prince of Thieves (which is based btw) and every single one of the Merry Men (who are presumably all from Nottinghamshire) speak with a different local accent and even some local dialects, including whatever hilarious version of English Christian Slater is affecting.

Some Hollywood producer was out in Los Angeles in the early ninties watching the Robin Hood dailies like “HA HA SURE SOUNDS LIKE BRITISH TO ME GOOD JOB GUYS” in between lines of coke and raping aspiring young male actors.

Anyway, the point is: the Souls games show appropriate deference to my people, and are based.

It has more chatty NPCs than all the other games put together, I think, and a bigger gameworld (plus named locations and travelers from outside The Lands Between) so they scoured Britain for interesting accents. There are some lovely different welsh accents in there.

Glad to hear from the locals. I don't know much about British accents, but I do like that each plays a part in their characteristics.

I thought Sekiro had done a pretty good job with their English script.

Sekiro is still pretty good but From Software used a different localisation agency for Sekiro and they didn’t pay the same attention to the casting - they’re just generic voice actor douchebags putting on different voices.

Demon’s, Dark 1, 2 and 3, Bloodborne, Deracine and Elden Ring all use the same localisation team (a British/Japanese team called Frognation). They tend to scour British theatre actors who have rarely done voice acting for games or animu to find the right voices for the roles. It’s a little rawer and more real, and the result is much better. They do great work.

The baritone British narrator in FF12 was great.

Another trick voice directors do is they have Brits do the voices for older characters, leaders, etc, but the little scrappy hero is always American. The problem is they make him talk straggy like an anime dude.

All modern DQ games use bongish. It's pretty nice. American actors tend to be really boring unless they ham it up.

based now exclude american's from all voice acting, slowly americans might learn to speak properly through media consumption.

Also its important to only use (non central London) south eastern English accents not any of the clowns in the north

Agreed with you until you started promoting effeminate southern accents. Better to choose one from the north so we can have proper vowels in words rather than just schwa or almost-schwa

This is click bait. The real reason is the director of the game has a working relationship with an English VA company in England that has being doing the English VA work in ff14 for 8 years. And they hired them instead of the original cast because it was cheaper and they were more available.

weird how they didn't say that and instead verified the headline

Interestingly enough the modern English accent was not something you’d ever hear in medieval Britain. There’s a reason why North American English has a markedly different accent than modern British English and that’s because it was has English was spoken back in the 1500s when mass immigration to the colonies began.

Sure it’s not exactly like what is was and there’s been some evolution of the accent due to influence of non English speaking immigrants but the accents on medieval times were not like modern day.

There are still rhotic accents in England that sound absolutely nothing like American accents though.

pre-RP southern English accents would obviously have sounded more like present day southwestern English accents than present day New England accents.

It probably sounded similar to an Irish accent, since they pronounce their Rs.

The FF guys are afraid the burgers would be mad if the characters who are supposed to be English or something were voiced by burgers since the burger slang would ruin authenticity or something

The British voice actors tend to have more of a kino approach, and sound authentic and immersive. Whereas the Burger voice actors tend to go for the cringe tropey anime voices.
