I finished Gundam SEED and thought it was great. Apparently SEED Destiny has compilation films. I might just watch those since I’ve heard several times over that the show is horrible.
I’m also ten episodes through Victory Gundam and I’m liking it so far. The mech designs are starting to grow on me, and I like how the anime actually shows the ruination of the Earth from environmental disasters in places instead of just having characters mention it while all the environments otherwise look normal. I’ve heard plenty of characters die in this but unfortunately it hasn’t started yet.

It's not the Mecha's that make this good, the implementation of them is also pretty mediocre in Code Geass.
It's more that smart antiheroes have a big appeal to a demographic that is currently underserved, the same people that like the joker, though I admit the smartness is more of a Sherlok Holmes magic smartness that uses intelligence as a Deus Ex Machina than real intelligence.

The mecha are integral to the plot and the world-building of Code Geass, and the implementation of them is masterful. The antiheroes are smart and resourceful, and the plot is full of twists and turns that keep the audience engaged. The same people who like the Joker will appreciate the smartness of the characters in Code Geass.
