It's just so strange to me.

The only vaguely similar thing we do in the US is giving significant cash gifts for weddings. But that has the pretext that you're helping the newlywed couple start their life together (buying a house is often near the top of their to-do list). Also nobody gives a shit if it's actual cash or not, most people write a check instead.

You guys just do this every year?

every year elders give red packets with a token amount of cash to the juniors for good luck

once you're married you become the giver :marseychingchongraging: the "token sums of cash" adds up quickly because of the non-married people and your nephews and nieces and shit + there's an expectation of giving a big one to your parents because filial piety and stuff

How much is typical? For weddings I usually write a check for $200 for friends and distant family. For immediate family (siblings) it'll be a bit more. Overall though it's not that much since I'm only going to so many weddings in a year and I only give presents if I go to the wedding.

for it's lunar new year it's typically $10-20 or more each for your juniors depending on how :marseyjewoftheorient: you are, more for siblings and immediate family and maybe 3-4 figs for your parents

god darn, if I tried giving my parents a gift of thousands of dollars they'd return it and tell me to keep my money lol, like they'd literally refuse it

Even for christmas gifts I spend a bit under $100/ea on them, but my family also never gifts cash for christmas/birthdays since we consider it in poor taste. Weddings are the only exception I make because realistically it's for the down payment on a house.
