it's gita time (@xoxogossipgita.bsky.social):
well for example here is the introduction to tiny tina www.youtube.com/watch?v=NxeH...
PigeonFish (@thepigeonfish.bsky.social):
Yeah I've played the game. I'm aware of the opening. Explain to me in what way it's racist, though.
Is it just because she uses a specific style of speech?
John E Warren ๐ค ๐โฟ๏ธ (@floppyadult.com):
you're so close
PigeonFish (@thepigeonfish.bsky.social):
So...the way a person speaks has nothing to do with their race and everything to do with where they learned to speak. I mentioned before that I'm a black man, and I dont speak like that because I grew up in an American suburb.
Electrichead (@electrichead.bsky.social):
Where was Tiny Tina, the fictional character, raised?
PigeonFish (@thepigeonfish.bsky.social):
On a fictional planet full of a lot of different kinds of people.
Electrichead (@electrichead.bsky.social):
I'm sorry this is incorrect. The correct answer is, "she was not raised, she is a fictional character." However, she was written by a real life person though, and to need to start interrogating the intent he had here and why he thinks this joke is funny, as well as the cultural context of the work.
PigeonFish (@thepigeonfish.bsky.social):
You're trying too hard for a "gotcha" moment here. Do you want a genuine discussion, or are you chasing clout?
In any case, sure, I accept that you find the character unfunny. We all have different tastes. That STILL doesn't exhibit any sort of disdain or disrespect to anyone's race.
PigeonFish (@thepigeonfish.bsky.social):
Unless you mean to say that ONLY black people can speak the way Tina does, which IS actually offensive.
Would it have been better if Tina were black? Also much more offensive that way.
Or are you of the opinion that people can simply not speak that way at all? Sounds offensive to me.
Ms. Penny Oaken (@skywitches.net):
The way she speaks โ her dialect โ is played as a punchline, to cast her as backwoods, rural, ignorant, & crazy. That is possible because of prevailing mainstream cultural attitudes towards people with that dialect. Those mainstream attitudes are a product of centuries-old white supremacist beliefs
Electrichead (@electrichead.bsky.social):
Honestly it's not even like borderlands is only racist. It also really hates poor southern white people, people with cleft palettes, and people with dwarfism. It's just kinda shitty and mean spirited in general, so I'm not sure why people want to defend it at all here.
