Wu's (nonsense) invocation of "antisemitism" here is a Dead Cat Strategy - an attempt to shock and strawman, to deflect and distract from the question of "Why are thousands of trans people blocking Brianna?".

It's also a targeted harassment prompt.

Alejandra Caraballo (@esqueer.net):

Lmao. It's working. Keep blocking away.

Why haven't you already blocked the muppet like 92% of Bluesky users? You're just giving them oxygen.

Ms. Penny Oaken, SkyWitch (@skywitches.net):

I love you.

(Because you have brought my politics of social media moderation full circle back at me, holding me accountable)

In a weird way, Brianna Wu being the (latest) mouthpiece for laundering "Please Just Accept That Some LGBTQ People Deserve To Be Othered" is a good sign —

First, they tried to Other lesbians & homosexual men. Obergefell shut that down.

Then they recruited TERF lesbians to split LGBTQ.

Ms. Penny Oaken, SkyWitch (@skywitches.net):

That didn't succeed.

Now they're down to recruiting a transmedicalist trans woman & Democratic politicians to beg us to even accept the premise and open negotiations on whom to offer up in sacrifice.

Ms. Penny Oaken, SkyWitch (@skywitches.net):

This is the kind of threshold I was contemplating yesterday; Wu has ~17k followers, and if she continues to prompt targeted harassment with defamatory accusations of antisemitism etc - directing her followers with the effect of circumventing the blocks - her followers will need to be blocklisted.

Ms. Penny Oaken, SkyWitch (@skywitches.net):

Maybe not today, maybe not tomorrow, maybe not even her, but it is coming that a disingenuous cloutmonger machiavellian boundary violator making bad faith claims of discrimination will require cauterization.

Ms. Penny Oaken, SkyWitch (@skywitches.net):

The model on this site is Eventual Enforcement, enabled by the community labelers & blocklists & reporting. Every major UCHISP has some form of Eventual Enforcement augmented by community association controls of some kind (except, now, Twitter).

This isn't the first major stresstest of their team.

Think we're witnessing genuine flop-sweat from the same cadre of profoundly dull contrarian columnists who have been getting grossly overpaid for writing the same boring column with minor variations since 2015.

Being tiresome on Twitter was a core part of their shtick, and it's not working here.

Faine Greenwood (@faineg.bsky.social):

The fact that their dumb owning the libs act isn't translating well over here is an interesting indicator that Twitter was very much designed to prop up talentless hacks whose only talent was being shitty to minorities while using the occasional mid-scoring SAT word.

Faine Greenwood (@faineg.bsky.social):

Anyway, these pathetic creatures are sustained by pissing off the libs, and the best thing you can do to cut them off from the Outrage Teat they depend on is just blocking them.

Preferably, pretend you've never heard of them at all. They hate that shit.

Faine Greenwood (@faineg.bsky.social):

The Centrist Columnist Mediocrity Class will respond with their sole defense mechanism: shrieking and emitting slime in the pages of rapidly declining legacy media publications, while, somehow, blaming The Queers.

Let them.

We don't have to care what they think anymore. We never did.

Faine Greenwood (@faineg.bsky.social):

Centrist Columnist Mediocrities are a lot like hagfish, albeit without the charm and with far more irrational dislike for minorities.

Hagfish may have unpleasant personal habits, but I've never met one who wanted to talk to me about how the scientific racism creeps have a point.

it is not lost on me that after nearly two years of bluesky's existence with the majority of that being an extremely trans positive space that the transphobic journ*lists are all clamoring to paper over that history.

this does NOT need to be twitter 2. social media CAN be good if we make it good.

barleybap (@barleybap.bsky.social):

Freely admit that it's perhaps just me being oversensitive, but got to say it's a bit gross seeing a lot of mostly cishet folk talking about how BlueSky has only just come alive and / or still doesn't serve a purpose when there's been a fairly active queer community the entire time I've been here.

Today, for more education about Moderation,

let's talk about The Importance of William "Bill" S. Preston, Esq., and Ted "Theodore" Logan — aka Bill & Ted, aka

Be Excellent To Each Other!

Ms. Penny Oaken, SkyWitch (@skywitches.net):

A great way to think about moderation on social media - especially here on BlueSky - is to imagine a group of people sitting around a table at a restaurant or café, and they're approached by a stranger.

Does this stranger treat the group the way one would expect in a café? Or are they a jerk?

Ms. Penny Oaken, SkyWitch (@skywitches.net):

This moment — respecting or invading the boundaries of a group in public — tells us a large amount about the person's intentions. Did they search a term to find a 2 month old thread? Are they approaching a group to challenge them to "debate me!" —?

Would you put up with this behaviour in public?

Ms. Penny Oaken, SkyWitch (@skywitches.net):

Spotting these behaviours is more than half the battle.

Some folks have blocklists titled "Debate Perverts", some "Hostile Jerks", etc.

Ultimately it all ties back to a root troll behaviour — the desire to violate boundaries.

Ms. Penny Oaken, SkyWitch (@skywitches.net):

So, for better than 90% of moderation / deciding whether to "ban" an account, think in terms of,

"Is this person's intent to test or violate a personal or community boundary?"

"Are they being the best person they could be?" is one form of that.

So, Be Excellent To Each Other!

valid. not sure the composable community mod systems have been really tested. like nation-state adversary tested. guess we'll see.

Sara Aniano (@coolfacejane.bsky.social):

My main concern about Bluesky right now is not that it's an echo chamber, but that the content hasn't gotten "bad enough" to adequately test its content moderation — in other words, if purveyors of disinfo and hate do come here, are moderators prepared to rise to the occasion?

Ms. Penny Oaken, SkyWitch (@skywitches.net):

My current concern is, "What effect does it have on the site if 30,000 accounts are added to a blocklist 10,000 people subscribe to". And - they can't disclose that (it would be like shouting "break us" if they did) & I can't test it just to test it.

But I see it approaching.

Ms. Penny Oaken, SkyWitch (@skywitches.net):

I think they'll be able to handle an influx of hate groups as long as user blocklists scale. An imageboard tried to "raid" harassment a month back & I'm told they script-made north of 100,000 sockpuppets, which T&S handled.

Ms. Penny Oaken, SkyWitch (@skywitches.net):

Hate / harassment on a nationstate level will either be AI-generated individuals, or they'll organize into "hives" the way /pol/ & groypers did on Twitter @ 2018, or they'll mass follow a "leader".

1 is expensive for an attacker; 2 & 3 are cheap to blockenheimer. Economics favour us in all 3.

Dr Henry 🦃 (@henryhenryhenry.com):

interesting. I get the sense that it's the non-standard BS-specific features—like you said, blocklists and such—that provide new terrain for organized frickery?

Ms. Penny Oaken, SkyWitch (@skywitches.net):

Blocklists here are almost certainly implemented with a Bloom filter, for space & computing resources efficiency.

They're not space-optimal, however, and they have to sacrifice more space to minimise false positives. Some providers that I know use them limit the # of elements, to prevent overflow.

Ms. Penny Oaken, SkyWitch (@skywitches.net):

Like, on Reddit, which uses Bloom filters for blocking, personal blocking is limited to 1,000 blocks.

There's also a compute hit for rebuilding them if elements are removed. There's ways to mitigate that, too, but no way to know if BlueSky has backend to do that.

Ms. Penny Oaken, SkyWitch (@skywitches.net):

I think they might have some experience / roadmap on handling these kinds of things, though, since there were people here early trying "block everyone" experiments.

Ms. Penny Oaken, SkyWitch (@skywitches.net):

Reddit's blocking limit is fricking terrible for anyone with an account more than two years old who's both moderately active and part of a marginalized community.

I agree 100%.

Every month I start up a script to cull the suspended accounts from mine, which is the only reason mine has only hit the limit twice.

People replied to this saying it was worth the price to him to destroy Twitter and such, and. He fought it. In court. It wasn't a clever ploy.

That he got some use out of it after he was stuck with it doesn't change the fact that he skidded butt-backwards into it with his pants on his head.

Alexandra Merideth Erin [she/her] (@alexandraerin.com):

Remember when Elon overpaid for the Twitter brand by like 300% because he wanted his buyout offer to be a meme and when he realized that the numbers actually mean things he tried to back out and a court forced him to honor the deal and then he threw the brand away anyway?
