Ms. Penny Oaken, SkyWitch (@skywitches.net):

I live in a suburb of Dallas, in one of the extremely few neighbourhoods in Texas whose electricity doesn't go out when the statewide grid goes down, solely because of a Catch-22: My distribution segment is also KRLD-AM's, & it is the Emergency Alert Primary Entry Point for N. TX

Regime Accountant, CPA (@regimecpa.bsky.social):

Moving to Texas is going to feel real bad for both the businesses and workers who did so if the US Balkanizes

Ms. Penny Oaken, SkyWitch (@skywitches.net):

HOWEVER

We ALWAYS KNOW that the grid has gone down, because our TV, landline internet, & landline phones go out.

Ms. Penny Oaken, SkyWitch (@skywitches.net):

A few decades ago, when I and friends were Home Shopping, the real estate agent unironically had us tour a home in one of the northern suburbs which had been apparently assembled by meth-addicted gnomes, from pallet wood; it was a not-to-code death trap, yet was ON THE MARKET

Ms. Penny Oaken, SkyWitch (@skywitches.net):

The house we settled on leasing, despite being professionally inspected, turned out to have a master suite ceiling fan which used the neutral as a hot - Or maybe it was the bare copper ground as a hot? In a two-switch setup.

Ms. Penny Oaken, SkyWitch (@skywitches.net):

Then there was West, Texas, where an empty school was levelled because a shed a dozen metres from it was used to store ammonium nitrate, and no one ever enforced safety regs, nor forced that company to carry insurance, so the taxpayers ate the bill

Ms. Penny Oaken, SkyWitch (@skywitches.net):

An entire class action lawsuit had to be brought to force the private company that owns and operates the natural gas lines, to repair and upgrade the lines, and that all happened AFTER my neighbours across the alley had to move out one winter because an interim repair attempt destroyed their lines

Ms. Penny Oaken, SkyWitch (@skywitches.net):

My suburb has one (1) store with a liquor license. One. It was grandfathered in after the city annexed the unincorporated County of Dallas land it was built on.

There is a beer & BBQ place downtown. They are subject to raids by Texas' dedicated, armed TABC police, to ensure no one is dancing

Ms. Penny Oaken, SkyWitch (@skywitches.net):

A major Beer / Wine / Liquor retailer, Spec's, was nearly fined into bankruptcy by TABC because of a single paperwork SNAFU over a misdelivered case of beer.

M I L L I O N S of $ of fines. License nearly suspended.

Only shaming by journ*lists stopped that process

Ms. Penny Oaken, SkyWitch (@skywitches.net):

TABC can yank a license if an outlet sells a bottle of wine on a Sunday morning, a relic of pre-1980's Blue Laws that forbade "luxury" items being sold on Sundays, and there's no way to challenge this under the law, because it's not a law, it's a licensing condition

Ms. Penny Oaken, SkyWitch (@skywitches.net):

THIS IS HOW IT WAS BEFORE TRUMP 2

If the US Balkanises, it will be soooo much worse
