There's two language families and 22 official languages in India, states are mostly organized on linguistic lines. About a quarter has Hindi for a mother tongue and maybe 60-70% understand it but its a sentimental issue, like I refuse to talk in Hindi with service strags when I'm home. I'll talk in their language when I'm in their states, in mine they have to speak in mine.
