You get into colleges depending on your rank in the college entrance exams. So when it comes to getting placed into colleges, backward castes get a bump in choice even if they are low ranked, thanks to reservations a.k.a. affirmative action.
So once they get to college and you have a 1000 ranker and a 10000 ranker sitting next to each other, that means the 10000 ranker is a reservation candidate, hence lower caste.
