Modi is a middle caste himself and Hindutva ideology has wanted to eradicate caste to unite Hindus since day 1.
Basically since muslims vote as a bloc and are a good 15% of the electorate they have historically been able to extract a lot of concessions. Without the muzzie vote, you need to consolidate >50% of the Hindu vote to win in our system which is difficult considering how many parties there are. BJP does win without them but with a modern government things change at snail's pace. They scaled back pic rel scholarships just this year, there were big protests in my uni over it with libshit hindoos crying about how their parents wouldn't be taxed to fund abdul's IED assembly classes anymore.

I have heard the Hindutvu claim that caste was just a fancy term for division of labour which used to be very mobile which Brits exploited to divide and conquer but every Hindutvu individual which I've met had a fixation on caste regardless.
