Was it ever not? As far back as I can remember, parties were literally bribing voters by distributing cash and freebies a couple of nights before election day. Like hundreds of millions in hard cash gets moved.
Anyway, he's right. All this carrot and no stick approach won't work for long.

This is how it is in every democracy. The economy spirals into communism, things start going to shit, and then eventually they elect a guy to pull back. Then they forget and things spiral into communism again

My roommate's parents sold agricultural land to send him to university and then he used what remained of that money+loaned money from like a dozen other relatives to buy an iPad. Because it had to be Apple. Flexed it at his classmates.
I learned that day that poors are poors for a reason. No matter what job he gets he'll always be poor.

Come on now I know India isn't exactly a rich nation, but selling land+loaning money+borrowing from relatives to buy a 700$ iPad seems outlandish for a congolesee too.

That's half a year's salary for the urban poor in tier 2 cities and below. More for rural poor, many of the subsistence farmers barely sell anything on the market cause they consume all they produce.

Ah I thought he meant doing all that to buy an iPad. No way land is that cheap even in India.
Makes more sense then.

If they need food, they'll work for it. Same as everyone has done for thousands of years. I get that they're poor Indians, but it's amazing how little people learn from so many instances of subsidizing poverty and getting more poverty. NYC is repeating this experiment with their asylum seekers and is melting down financially while Texas didn't give them shit and has been much better off for decades.

Funnily enough we already got a trial of what UBI here would look like
Was only available to rural populations and only guaranteed hundred day's work(hundred day's payment that is cause there's only so much work that needs doing at village level with unskilled labourers). Payment was decent for rural labour, around 4$ per day. They'd stay unemployed the other 265 days, food and utilities are free and with that 100 days income they can buy whatever little else they need. So.
When I read stuff like this, that people will gladly subsist on 400$ per year for a family of four as long as they don't have to work its just
