I think most public transit should be free, This is probably my most liberal opinion but realistically if you want more people to use it, and you do because that makes it more cost efficient, making it free is one of the best ways to do it. It's kinda like how it's a lot easier to go to a place where there is easy free parking nearby, it just makes it easier to commit to going and spending money.

Yes but no
It's yet another idea that is theoretically great in a utopia, but poor people exist, making it impossible to maintain properly.

Yeah, these ideas are how public policy neurodivergents get us in these situations. Makes sense on paper but doesn't take undesirables into account

No lmao then all public transport becomes dependent on government funding, there would be no incentive to improve experience or rider base, less will be invested in maintenance and expansion, it'll be terrible.

You would have to pay me to use the bus. I value my time more than the $3 I would save on gas riding the bus.
The only way to make public transit significantly more widely used is to either make people so poor they can't afford a car, or make public transit rival the convenience and immediacy of a personal car while also maintaining the freedom to live away from major urban population centers cars provide.

Real,
For most people the subway/metro in a city is the only transit they would want/need

The only well loved transit systems I've seen are ones that went very heavy on trains. To get that requires a pretty big/dense populatuon to support. I'm not sure most US mid sized cities could support it.

Where I live it's free if you're old, disabled, or a student. which is like 90% of people using the bus.
otherwise it's 2$ to ride the bus for an hour. which is basically free tbh.
