The Soviets took over the massive air and naval base at Cam Ranh Bay that the US had built, so they could fly patrol planes out of there and have ships resupply there. It wasn't really that important because the Soviets couldn't project power that far, but there were worries it could develop into a threat in the future.
Through the 1980s Vietnam was doing the 2nd Cambodian genocide and in a constant low level border war with China. But it wasn't thought about that much. Americans' attention was on Europe, the Middle East, and maybe a little bit on Korea.
I guess you've never heard the phrase "the wrong war in the wrong place at the wrong time". Kid you really are out of your depth.
That's why there was a lot of opposition from military leaders from the beginning to getting involved. Vietnam was not of great strategic importance, but politicians didn't want bad headlines so they gradually dragged us into a huge war there.
If your leaders and public thought it was an important theater, enough to institute a draft for it, that's what your country believed. Dissent from certain individuals or condemning the efforts in hindsight doesn't erase the fact that you tried and failed to stem communism in mainland SEA. Retconning such an aim as unnecessary is Paki tier .
In fact throughout the cold war commies were on the advance, they suffered some reverses in Lat Am true but in Africa and Asia they were advancing everywhere. Including the ME. If Mother Russia didn't suddenly commit seppuku you'd likely have lost all of Eurasia+Africa to them eventually, save for the west EU holdouts and Japan/Philippines/Indonesia.

Or they go the way of Vietnam and open up to markets. Mozambique and many other dumb commie countries in the sub-Sahara are also going this route, except they're clutching a bit too hard to their socialist past (just like India was! ).

The one country that was truly strategically vital (more than India) was Indonesia and we won there. Everything else in SE Asia was a sideshow.
