It's kinda true, even Dalits here tend be fair/light brown. There are a few reasons for this, like Kerala being a major spice trade hub during classical times bringing in several traders from North Africa/Rome/Levantine/Middle East who formed communities and religious institutions here. Further reasons could be because of migration from IVC after it's collapse (coastal Karnataka is very similar to Kerala), and the two big UC groups here, Nairs and Nasranis (accounting for 30% of the population together), intermixing quite a lot with other groups.
