Depends on how big their states were. Their liquid assets and customary dues were taken away but they kept immovable assets and for richer ones those were substantial. Like right next to Delhi is the state of Rajasthan which has probably highest density of medieval castles and forts, 90% of them are run as luxury tourism places now. I was at a major fort, operated by archaelogical society but still owned by legacy royal family and they were setting up lighting and decorations for a wedding there after visiting hours.
