Generally, caste is presumed to be patrilineal. But with all the affirmative action policies around, some of them choose SC (dalit) but still behave like Brahmins, socially.
Basically they pick and choose based on what gives them an edge in a situation. It's kinda like with how mixed/biracials in the US select black because it gives them a bump in applications.
