how most of Bangladesh is tribals who converted during islamic 
rule. IIRC, there's even a noticeable genetic difference 
between 
both.

Yeah, higher austronesian ancestry the further east you move with chittagong area people basically indistinguishable from Burmese. Even modern WB is probably most diverse Indian state, there's 3 major language families but the typical Bengali, part of the gangetic agricultural complex, is more closely related to rest of India and obviously Bengali UCs cluster entirely with other Indian UCs. Bangladesh was almost entirely inhospitable jungle till the Mughal period, when the principle course of the Ganga shifted further east.

Bangla is the language, bangali are the people. Other than the religion there's only some minor dialect based differences, in Punjabi there's a stronger differentiation between three-four strands of Punjabi I think.
