Hostel owners rally to end work-from-home in IT belt

To make their voice heard, members of the IT Corridor Hostels Association recently took out a protest rally in front of Infosys, Pocharam. "In places like Pocharam, many of us have taken loans and constructed buildings to cater to the IT rush. But now, we are overburdened with EMIs and are not getting any income because companies are still allowing employees to work-from-home. This needs to end as the govt has allotted plots to companies at subsidised cost for the benefit of all and not just one company," said Amarnath Reddy Pasam, president of the association.

Hyderabad: Not just managers and employers, now even hostel owners in the IT corridor want companies to do away with work-from-home and make it compulsory for employees to attend office every day. Their argument: Hostels are struggling to survive post-pandemic, given their dependence on the IT crowd.

There are about 700 apartment-turned-hostels near the Infosys campus in Pocharam with at least another 50 near the IT corridor. In areas like Jodimetla and Uppal, another 200 hostels are said to be operational — all thriving entirely on the rush of the IT workforce from outside Hyderabad.

According to association members, currently, almost all these hostels are running at less than 20% occupancy. They are now planning to meet the IT secretary, IT minister, and chief minister to appraise them of the issue and seek their help in dealing with this steep financial loss.

Many building owners, who have rented out their premises to hostels, said that their income has reduced drastically in the last two to three years.

Hostels as in single occupancy rooms with common pottys or shared rooms? Its so depressing seeing adult wagies stay in hostels, I stayed at one in slumbai where basically everyone else was long time boarder, living in bunk beds pushed up against each other so there's 10 people in line of sight at all times. Staying at hostels for two weeks gets tiring when I'm out on a trip, can't imagine living permanently like that.

yeah they say PG but they are all hostels where you share rooms with others. Rarely there are any Single room with Bathroom ones. The ones that have these facilities are fully occupied. All these are all those shoddy places which have shit food and shit facilities.

My friend used to stay in one of those, he just went there to sleep thats all rest of the time hung out with us all day

When they had those TV guys going down into mukherjee nagar basements after the incident I was genuinely shocked I pay 10k for a small room with attached potty(no kitchen) in a DDA complex in south Delhi. There were people there who were paying 12k for a literal basement room where there isn't even space to stretch your arms out fully for a man, no attached potty or anything. Frickers could have easily lived somewhere else and just commuted but most are prob dehatis who have no contacts or idea how to operate in big cities so they get taken for a ride by touts.

yeah but these places promise to do a lot more than just give a room. Food, cleaning, electricity/water is usually included etc so they are an attractive choice for people.

All that combined costs me 13-14k. 2k for meals, 1-2k electricity bill usually. More but still, not that much. Those aren't livable conditions.

Even more depressing than the 3 hour commutes through city traffic on a corporate shuttle that emails your boss about traffic jams like you're a toddler going to nursery school

Well I don't because I'm not Indian lol, but they might have to. I don't ask my junior dev to make up for time lost sitting in traffic because she doesn't get anything useful done even when she's working

I have as much sympathy for them as downtown businesses crying that they didn't have any customers in their shitty shops because everyone was working from home. Frick you and your overpriced lease, you're whole business was built around having a captive audience.
