They aren't 'cartoonishly evil' but the reason people dislike them is because they knowingly mis-sold MBS before 2008 and capitalised on their cratering by buying up huge amounts of foreclosed residential property.
They also have unique access to Chinese markets and turn a blind eye to massive IP fraud, dirty industry and modern slavery issues etc while espousing ESG to western investors. This kind of stuff rubs chuds the wrong way.
