I could be wrong as my historical interests are more in China and Korea but I don't think pain has to do with it. The reason for them stabbing in the stomach is because they believe that the soul or essence(something like that) is in the stomach. Also in WWII they switched to cyanide pills which means there's a clear lack of care for the death itself.

The Chinese committed suicide even more then the Japanese. Within Confucian ideology suicide and self harm were seen as bad, but they also believed that all needs were hierarchical. If you needed to hurt or keep yourself safe to achieve higher spiritual devotion then you must do so, or if you must die to save a loved one then it was acceptable. It was seen in a similar light to the way Europeans view(ed) it, self harm is bad and evil, but doing it for good was the purest form of goodness. Women also would preform a more ritualistic and less spiritual form of suicide most often to protect their chastity, as if under the threat of r*pe, as well as to follow their husbands or sons into death. But despite this, the most common reason was to protect ones familial or personal honor, usually in the face of cowardice or crime. This became such a big issue in the pre-modern period that it was in some cases made illegal unless the person was under civic order.
Koreans are more tentative with the idea, having a harsher outlook on selfish suicides. But they still have the general idea to preserve ones honor even if it means suicide, though this is not ritualistic. But they do also have the tradition of sympathy or loyalty suicide, in which you commit suicide because someone you loved or respected did.
You also have to remember how interconnected Korean and Japan are, as well as how disconnected China as a whole is. China is so massive that cultural groups are about as plentiful as the northwestern middle east, so much of their cultural record comes from whichever ethnic group ruled at that time. They also enjoyed burning and erasing non conforming records from previous dynasties.
