The balls are colored with bright primary colors, the bumble bees probably thought they are flowers and try to stand on them to pollinate, but keep rolling backward!
bees were given access to two colored chambers, one always containing movable balls and one without any objects. When tested and given a choice between the two chambers, neither containing balls, bees showed a preference for the color of the chamber previously associated with the wooden balls.
I wonder why that is!!
The study just shows how bees remember what fields to come back to, maybe the journo misinterpreted the study?
the study is explicitly made to test if bumblebees like to “play”. but they really do make some dumbass assumptions in this paper. lots of mammalo-centric ideas where other explanations might make more sense, they even compare their results to a study where rats play - you know, that infinitely smarter mammal…

“For instance, in this experiment, ball rolling never resulted in the provision of food. The bees’ nectar and pollen could be easily accessed in a separate room without ever having to interact with the balls. The bees never attempted to bite or extend their proboscis toward the balls in search of a sugary reward. Plus, most importantly, they came back to roll the ball one additional day or two different additional days even after foraging. (In nature, bees can be observed to stray away from the flowers that no longer give them a sugary reward.)”
