I think it's probably not really about the chicks at all, but it's to help induce regurgitation in the parent.

It's probably so that they don't waste food on deformed chicks. Flight is tricky so you'll notice a lot of breeding and parenting behaviors to make sure they're not wasting resources on the unfit.
