I think it's probably not really about the chicks at all, but it's to help induce regurgitation in the parent. :marseydarwin:

It's probably so that they don't waste food on deformed chicks. Flight is tricky so you'll notice a lot of breeding and parenting behaviors to make sure they're not wasting resources on the unfit.
