!catholics !christians Happy 8th Sunday of Ordinary Time!

First Reading

When a sieve is shaken, the husks appear;

so do one's faults when one speaks.

As the test of what the potter molds is in the furnace,

so in tribulation is the test of the just.

The fruit of a tree shows the care it has had;

so too does one's speech disclose the bent of one's mind.

Praise no one before he speaks,

for it is then that people are tested.

-Sirach 27:4-7

Responsorial Psalm

R (cf. 2a) Lord, it is good to give thanks to you.

It is good to give thanks to the LORD,

        to sing praise to your name, Most High,

To proclaim your kindness at dawn

        and your faithfulness throughout the night.

R Lord, it is good to give thanks to you.

The just one shall flourish like the palm tree,

        like a cedar of Lebanon shall he grow.

They that are planted in the house of the LORD

        shall flourish in the courts of our God.

R Lord, it is good to give thanks to you.

They shall bear fruit even in old age;

        vigorous and sturdy shall they be,

Declaring how just is the LORD,

        my rock, in whom there is no wrong.

R Lord, it is good to give thanks to you.

-Psalm 92:2-3, 13-14, 15-16

Second Reading

Brothers and sisters:

When this which is corruptible clothes itself with incorruptibility

and this which is mortal clothes itself with immortality,

then the word that is written shall come about:

        Death is swallowed up in victory.

                    Where, O death, is your victory?

                    Where, O death, is your sting?

The sting of death is sin,

and the power of sin is the law.

But thanks be to God who gives us the victory

through our Lord Jesus Christ.

Therefore, my beloved brothers and sisters,

be firm, steadfast, always fully devoted to the work of the Lord,

knowing that in the Lord your labor is not in vain.

-1 Corinthians 15:54-58

Alleluia

R. Alleluia, alleluia.

Shine like lights in the world

as you hold on to the word of life.

R. Alleluia, alleluia.

-Philippians 2:15d, 16a

Gospel

Jesus told his disciples a parable,

"Can a blind person guide a blind person?

Will not both fall into a pit?

No disciple is superior to the teacher;

but when fully trained,

every disciple will be like his teacher.

Why do you notice the splinter in your brother's eye,

but do not perceive the wooden beam in your own?

How can you say to your brother,

'Brother, let me remove that splinter in your eye,'

when you do not even notice the wooden beam in your own eye?

You hypocrite! Remove the wooden beam from your eye first;

then you will see clearly

to remove the splinter in your brother's eye.

"A good tree does not bear rotten fruit,

nor does a rotten tree bear good fruit.

For every tree is known by its own fruit.

For people do not pick figs from thornbushes,

nor do they gather grapes from brambles.

A good person out of the store of goodness in his heart produces good,

but an evil person out of a store of evil produces evil;

for from the fullness of the heart the mouth speaks."

-Luke 6:39-54

"A good tree does not bear rotten fruit." Let people's actions speak for them; what kind of self-professed good person does evil things?

One thing from the priest's homily that stood out what he spoke, Internet hypocrisy we read or hear about people criticizing / :marseygossip: others without seeing the flaws in themselves. It's a self-defence mechanism to make us look strong to other weak, rather than being seeing like God does as equals.

@Soren I'm so proud of you for making a relevant bible reference earlier to me today, I never realized you were a practicing Catholic.

I come from a first generation immigrant Romanian Catholic family. So I spent a lot of time at church functions and events.

I ended up winning a full ride to Sacred Heart in Detroit, was pushed into going.

Got dissolutioned after a traumatic personal event

There really isn't anything interesting about it

I don't know, I think that is interesting. Winning the scholarship implies you applied for it in the first place, were you going there as a seminarian or for a lay degree?

Psalms 92:2-3

To proclaim your loving kindness in the morning, And your faithfulness every night, With the ten-stringed lute, with the harp, And with the melody of the lyre.

1 Corinthians 15:54-58

But when this corruptible will have put on incorruption, and this mortal will have put on immortality, then what is written will happen: "Death is swallowed up in victory." "Death, where is your sting? Hades, where is your victory?" The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law. But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. Therefore, my beloved brothers, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the Lord's work, because you know that your labor is not in vain in the Lord.

Philippians 2:15

that you may become blameless and harmless, children of God without blemish in the midst of a crooked and perverse generation, among whom you are seen as lights in the world,

Luke 6:39-54

He spoke a parable to them. "Can the blind guide the blind? Won't they both fall into a pit? A disciple is not above his teacher, but everyone when he is fully trained will be like his teacher. Why do you see the speck of chaff that is in your brother's eye, but don't consider the beam that is in your own eye? Or how can you tell your brother, 'Brother, let me remove the speck of chaff that is in your eye,' when you yourself don't see the beam that is in your own eye? You hypocrite! First remove the beam from your own eye, and then you can see clearly to remove the speck of chaff that is in your brother's eye. For there is no good tree that brings forth rotten fruit; nor again a rotten tree that brings forth good fruit. For each tree is known by its own fruit. For people don't gather figs from thorns, nor do they gather grapes from a bramble bush. The good man out of the good treasure of his heart brings out that which is good, and the evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart brings out that which is evil, for out of the abundance of the heart, his mouth speaks. "Why do you call me, 'Lord, Lord,' and don't do the things which I say? Everyone who comes to me, and hears my words, and does them, I will show you who he is like. He is like a man building a house, who dug and went deep, and laid a foundation on the rock. When a flood arose, the stream broke against that house, and could not shake it, because it was founded on the rock. But he who hears, and doesn't do, is like a man who built a house on the earth without a foundation, against which the stream broke, and immediately it fell, and the ruin of that house was great."

"Each of you knows that the foundation of our faith is charity. Without it, our religion would crumble. We will never be truly Catholic unless we conform our entire lives to the two commandments that are the essence of the Catholic faith: to love the Lord, our God, with all our strength, and to love our neighbor as ourselves… With charity, we sow the seeds of that true peace which only our faith in Jesus Christ can give us by making us all brothers and sisters. I know that this way is steep, and difficult, and strewn with thorns, while at first glance the other path seems easier, more pleasant, and more satisfying. But the fact is, if we could look into the hearts of those who follow the perverse paths of this world, we would see that they lack the serenity that comes to those who have faced a thousand difficulties and who have renounced material pleasure to follow God's law."-Blessed Piero Giorgio Frassati
