what is the catholic position on deuteronomy 22:13-21?

(King James Version)

13 If any man take a wife, and go in unto her, and hate her,

14 And give occasions of speech against her, and bring up an evil name upon her, and say, I took this woman, and when I came to her, I found her not a maid:

15 Then shall the father of the damsel, and her mother, take and bring forth the tokens of the damsel's virginity unto the elders of the city in the gate:

16 And the damsel's father shall say unto the elders, I gave my daughter unto this man to wife, and he hateth her;

17 And, lo, he hath given occasions of speech against her, saying, I found not thy daughter a maid; and yet these are the tokens of my daughter's virginity. And they shall spread the cloth before the elders of the city.

18 And the elders of that city shall take that man and chastise him;

19 And they shall amerce him in an hundred shekels of silver, and give them unto the father of the damsel, because he hath brought up an evil name upon a virgin of Israel: and she shall be his wife; he may not put her away all his days.

20 But if this thing be true, and the tokens of virginity be not found for the damsel:

21 Then they shall bring out the damsel to the door of her father's house, and the men of her city shall stone her with stones that she die: because she hath wrought folly in Israel, to play the whore in her father's house: so shalt thou put evil away from among you.

22 If a man be found lying with a woman married to an husband, then they shall both of them die, both the man that lay with the woman, and the woman: so shalt thou put away evil from Israel.

what happened to stoning ppl anyways?

The RCC believes that Jesus fulfilled the law, which means the legal bindings of the old Mosaic law no longer neatly apply (CCC 577-582). A biblical literalist might find this passage and think, "God was really big on stoning thots to death. We should reimplement that ourselves." Not so. As the law has been fulfilled, it no longer applies as a system of strict rules and commands. However, it does remain as a communicated expectation of God towards the religious authorities of the day. So we ought to understand and consider the passage. And to understand the passage, it must be understood in its context, as its listener and its scribe would have understood it while writing it down.

A few considerations:

  • Judaism was and is a legalistic religion; the function of a rabbi is not merely to provide spiritual guidance and judgment, but also to serve as a secular judge on matters like marriage, divorce, probate, etc. Therefore, these kinds of ancient contractual rules are found throughout the old testament.

  • Marriage contracts were significant in ancient societies.

  • Paternity could not be established through scientific testing.

  • Ancient societies in the region believed punishments should be harsh, to enforce compliance by example.

It's a good example of why we must understand the context of the scripture, and not merely its explicit content. Ancient Jews would never have understood this as an inviolable command from God, but rather more like a legal test from the SCOTUS. When a bizarre or iffy case came before a judge of the time, there would of course be the prescribed punishment, but also competing obligations towards the dignity of the offender and the interests of justice. Modern technology lets us solve all these problems. Child support laws, paternity testing, birth control, etc. all mean that primitive forensics and threats of death to ensure paternity within a marriage are unnecessary. Mosaic law also expresses a hierarchy of commandments, with the preservation of human life at the top, so a judge is obligated to prefer a non-lethal judgment if one is available to him.

So, let us consider the intention and meaning of this now-surpassed instruction. Paternity is a serious matter, as are marriage contracts, and when faced with daunting constraints, a strong penalty is expected. However, the command was explicitly understood to be flexible, not absolute, and other commandments could take precedence if they spared human life or served a greater divine purpose. For a Catholic, divorce is forbidden and there is expiation of sins through the sacrament of reconciliation. Furthermore, other avenues exist to serve the interests of the parties to the lawsuit, and the Mosaic law also commanded that these be preferred over a penalty of death. In summary, we understand from this passage that false paternity and adultery are grave offenses against the marital contract, but we also understand that the penalty of death is an anachronism for our modern world and Church.

Jesus didn't only change the rules, he actually revised the Jewish concept of sin pretty radically too. Judaism (being very legalistic) puts a big emphasis on voluntary acts (or actus reus, in US legal parlance). So if you lust after your neighbor, but then go "Ah, eh, nah, I'm going to control myself," you're A-OK. You have done nothing wrong. Jesus didn't think like that. In fact, he said quite literally the opposite:

>But I tell you that anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart. (Matthew 5:28)

That is, God isn't merely examining your voluntary acts, but also who you are inside. This is just one of many reasons Jews don't regard Christians as Jews. There really are huge differences between them in a theological sense. Some Christians noticed this and, taken with the extreme difference, actually hypothesized that there were two gods, one good and one evil, and that Jesus was from Team Good God.

I think you're kind of turning this on its head tho. Obviously a lot of Matthew is saying basically "my father thought you r-slurs could do better but he's drastically lowered his expectations seeing how you actually act". It's not meant to a goal for humanity, it's an insult about how worthless we are. (Which is totally justified.)

Deuteronomy 22:13-21

If any man take a wife, and go in to her, and hate her, and lay shameful things to her charge, and bring up an evil name on her, and say, I took this woman, and when I came near to her, I didn't find in her the tokens of virginity; then shall the father of the young lady, and her mother, take and bring forth the tokens of the young lady's virginity to the elders of the city in the gate; and the young lady's father shall tell the elders, I gave my daughter to this man to wife, and he hates her; and, behold, he has laid shameful things [to her charge], saying, I didn't find in your daughter the tokens of virginity; and yet these are the tokens of my daughter's virginity. They shall spread the garment before the elders of the city. The elders of that city shall take the man and chastise him; and they shall fine him one hundred [shekels] of silver, and give them to the father of the young lady, because he has brought up an evil name on a virgin of Israel: and she shall be his wife; he may not put her away all his days. But if this thing be true, that the tokens of virginity were not found in the young lady; then they shall bring out the young lady to the door of her father's house, and the men of her city shall stone her to death with stones, because she has done folly in Israel, to play the prostitute in her father's house: so shall you put away the evil from the midst of you.

Absolutely. There's all kinds of weird keyboard commands that you have to use.

We put up with this bullshit in the early 1990s but nobody would now. I mean including me.

That was the point of the LP was that this is an incredible game, one of the best and certainly most detailed ever made, but the UI involves a lot of reading keyboard shortcuts and stuff I know nobody will actually play it.

Get ready for phase 2: We break all the laws and run into the dark side of Darklands.
